UPDATE: Huge Pet Food Recall

Roxeanne Vainuku, Q13 FOX News Reporter

March 16, 2007

SEATTLE — It is pet food panic in stores tonight. Pet food maker Menu Foods pulled 60-million containers of moist dog and cat food from shelves.

The ban is in its early stages and it so widespread, some stores fear selling any questionable pet food products at all. "It's a huge list, says Matt Park, Operations Manager at Seattle's PetSmart. "People feed their animals this every day. It's a huge mess."

Here's what we know right now about which brands are affected:

Old Roy

Special Kitty

Sophisticat and Sophisticat Supreme

Grreat Choice

Iams

Eukanuba

Nutro

Authority

Award

Science Diet

Mighty Dog Pouches

Mixables

As well as WalMart, Safeway and Kroger store brands.

You'll find those products for sale at WalMart, Safeway, Fred Meyer, QFC and PetSmart as well as other stores.

The products in question are "cuts and gravy style" That's a meat in gravy type food that's sold in cans and small foil pouches.

The recall affects products sold between December 3rd and March 6th.

"It is frightening," says Margaret Collins. She owns three dogs and learned more about the recall while shopping at Seattle's PetSmart store. "I can't imagine if I'd been feeding my dogs those foods...the fear!" she says.

Menu Foods doesn't know tonight what is making animals sick. What the company does know is that something is clearly wrong.

Pet owners reported dogs and cats vomiting and ultimately suffering kidney failure after eating the foods--at least ten pets have died.

Menu Foods is expected to release a full list of brands and lot numbers Saturday morning.

PetSmart recommends pet owners discontinue use of these products immediately and contact your veterinarian if you have concerns that your pet may have been affected by eating food addressed in this recall.

Customers with concerns or questions should contact Menu Foods at 1-866-463-6738 or online at www.menufoods.com/recall

Ya know its funny.  We were talking about it last night.  A can of cheap Tuna like you would use for a Tuna sandwich is actually cheaper than a can of good cat food.   :shrugs:  I know it bads for them except for a treat now and then.  But maybe we should be looking at other foods that might be good for them.  Rather than just expecting the highest price cat food is the best.

Heh - I'll get Amanda signed up here, and she can harp at ya'll about pet food n' stuff.  Her last report she submitted at school (studying to be a veterinary nurse BTW) was all about pet foods, costs, health benefits, etc...   ;)
