Does anyone have a harmonic balancer for a Fiero 2.8 kicking around? The one on my ‘86 GT is screwed up as the outer ring has spun on the inner hub. Not only does this throw off the balancing of the engine, but it makes for a very difficult job timing the engine as the TDC marks are on the outer ring of the balancer. To repeat, a harmonic balancer for the Fiero 2.8 is required (preferably without a groove worn where the oil seal rides). Balancers for other 2.8s have the TDC marks in the wrong spot. Please let me know where you are and how much you’d like for one. (I’m in Vancouver.) Thanks. Edited by Patrick |

Oh, I like the price! Thanks Mark, your kind offer is most appreciated. Let me just first see if anyone a little closer to home might have one. (Ya ya, I know Fort Langley isn't at the other end of the universe... |

I know you can get them for SBC's but I wonder if you can get them for the Fiero 2.8's. It is a hat looking thing, you remove your pulleys it slides over the balancer and then the pulleys go back on the car. The way it get sandwiched in there it gets aligned using the bolts in the balancer so it can't slip, then on the outside of the hat, it has nice timing marks etched into it. Its made from fairly thin sheet metal so it does not affect your pulley alignment either. |

Blair, thanks very much for the offer. Sure, I'd love to come out. Can I have a peek at John Carlo's Fiero while I'm out there? Do I need to bring a puller or do you have one there I can use? Please PM or email me at mnofony@yahoo.com to let me know when I can come out. Any chance I could make the trek tomorrow (Thursday) morning? -Patrick |

Dave, That device sounds like it would be great for a balancer where the TDC marks are simply difficult to see when doing ignition timing, but I don't think it would be suitable for my situation where the balancer has spun and is now out of balance. No point getting the timing perfect if the motor is still going to vibrate more than it should. Edited by Patrick |

The Harmonic Balancer on the end pulley end of the crankshaft does very little on the Fiero. I know people will argue with me over it. However I am speaking from personal experience, I drove my 85GT for 3 years without ANY balancer on the end. The donut had spun right off, and was rattling around, so I pulled the pulley off, removed the donut, put the pulley back on and kept driving it. 3 years (50,000 kms) later the engine finally let go. It lost a rod bearing on the #3cylnder. Your main balancer is the flywheel.

Well, there you go. If you had a proper balancer on there you'd still be tooting around with that engine. heh heh... |

Actually that motor was well on its way out before the balancer problem, the actual failure was due to making an emergency run to Seattle and back. I was in such a rush that I did not check the oil on the return trip and made it as far as the double switchback corners in Cloverdale, 2 high speed turns, starved the pump through the corners and I actually felt the engine lug down as the bearing started to seize. That was the end of that. I limped it home with the rod beating away and swapped out for another motor.

Thought some of you might wish to see what a "spun" balancer looks like. The timing mark is supposed to line up almost beside the keyway. One look at my old balancer and you can see that something is messed up! Thanks to Blair (who I met for the first time this past Monday, great guy Today I installed the balancer as well as a custom made Fiero Belt Tensioner made by Dodgerunner at PFF. Everything went well. I can now time my engine properly and.... no more belt squeal! I’m quite pleased.
