A fork in the road of life, Advice wanted

       As many of you already know, I am at a fork in the road of life and I would like some input from my 2nd Family at West Coast Fiero's and friends in BC Canada.

           The fork is to remain in Canada.  Sell of everything down here and come back to BC with enough cash to nearly buy a small house. (around $220,000) Plus enough tools that I will have to rent a 5 ton truck just due to weight)

Or Stay here.

       Keep my half of the House and buy out my sister on her half of the property here, and KEEP the house.    If I give my sister my half of the cash which is around 40,000 in cash, then get a small mortgage of 90,000 I could own this house, which includes 2 acres of land, a partial machine shop, every tool and welder I could every ask for.  Room to park up to 20 cars if needed.  The house is HUGE complete basement, around 2000sq feet, main floor around 2000sq ft, and upstairs bedroom / rec room, about 500sq feet.  If I take the house, it will give me the option to slowly sell of many of his collections of antiques to the best buyers rather than just auction it off. 

       The most important things keeping me in Canada are my friends, my connections to the club members and my life.   The Canadian medical and never having to worry about taking Arianna to the doctor.     I would be terrified bringing her down her knowing that she if got sick or hurt before we found medical insurance, we could loose ti all from one hospital visit.   

         I love my friends in Canada, I actually enjoy my new job. Lisa has a great job in Canada.  The only thing we were missing in Canada was a good place to live with property and places to work on Fiero's that we can call our own.  

         Should I leave my life in Canada and start a new life in Oregon.

What would You Do?

David,

I would suggest meeting with a financial advisor, realitor and mortgage broker and do some research...Kerstin and I went through this whole process recently, it was educational and in the process learn't a few things that we were not aware of then.

Yes you may be able to gain alot in Oregon, but you have to consider the future with your family...it is not cheap to live here, but there is so much to offer, and our financial situation and work is so much better than the US, alot depends on the locations of course.

If you want some contacts that I know would help, let me know.

I think you should stay in Canada Dave. The long term benefits FAR
outweigh the short term in the U.S., medical alone should be incentive
enough I would think.

Take your time, slow down and have a good think on what your long
term goals are. Write down the pros and cons and get your close
advisors around you to hash it out a bit.

As always my ear is always here to bend if need be.

It never ceases to amaze me how an economy that is very quickly going down the tubes (double digit unemployment rates), is all for raising costs for what should be a right, not a privilege.

Anyways Dave, take care down there. Give lots of hugs to the girls and go slow. It'll all come out in the wash in the end. As Shakey said, it gets easier as time crunches away at the jagged shards.

Dave I'm assuming that you are the executor. You are allowed to
use Estate funds to deal with this. So, I would hire someone to
look after the house while you figure all this out. This person
could be a local friend, a realestate broker, a notary or any
property manager in town. Let these people help you for a few
months while you figure things out. There really is no rush. Use
Estate money to pay your expenses to go down and deal with in-
person stuff as needed.

I have been involved in this sort of thing before where it took 2
years to figure everything out. Don't beat yourself up trying to
rush.

You are allowed to grieve too.

I agree with others about the medical and general living
conditions here. You may or may not put any weight to the US's
economic problems but I personally think it is going to get much
worse soon.

I wish you both the best outcome.

One thing (amongst zillions!) to consider.  The US buck sucks right now, and there isn't a whole lot of end in sight for it. So that 220K, might only net you a bit over 200K in canuck bucks.  And all that's going to get you up here for property is...  well... a small patch of dirt with nothing on it.

Look at my place.  Not huge. Not the most expensive area. And the dirt alone sells for about 430K right now.

Don't rush it though as Damien said.  You've got enough on your mind (which I'm sure isn't all here/there after everything you've had to endure), and making a snap decision just isn't the right thing to do.

Get someone down there to watch the joint, come back, get affairs in order remotely where you can.

One option is to keep living up here (close to free) and save up every penny you can, as you keep working. Use that to pay off your sister. Then you move there, and live mortgage free.  At least then you don't need a 6 figure salary just to pay for health care, eat, AND pay (an albeit small, but still costly) mortgage.

Investment property...or vacation home, either way, take your time

i agree with the others.

if this was my situation, i would look at the long term US economy. is it possible to grab that 5 ton and come home with the things that you can't part with and you and your sister rent the home until the economy improves.

owning that home and having it rented may give you an asset that you can use in Canada to get into a better home here (like a secure, low interest line of credit).

is the land sub-dividable? look into the zoning and talk to the city planners there. gather the info for a long term look see....

Brian's advice to chat with a professional is sound.

David,
Like others have said already, don't do anything drastic just yet. Think it
through. Your first priority is your family and yourself. If you're having
major problems getting by here, then a change might not be a bad idea.
However, the change might be fraught with risks.

You might consider hiring somebody to manage the property in Oregon,
rent it out, and maybe generate some income.   

There is a reason you can buy large property for $220K in Oregon, but
can't even get into a rundown condo in the Vancouver BC area for
anything under $300K. Plus it's not all about money either, is it?

The US buck will bounce back eventually, but your priority is your family
for today (the present). The future can be planned for, but you deal with
whatever issues come up when that time comes.
