So Lisa and I jumped in the GTP for a quick run to Bellingham, as we hit I-5 I quickly noticed something was not right, I got up to 120kph set the cruise and saw the rpms were sitting right at 3000. I looked down it was in 4th it should have been 1900 or so, as we have the 4T65e HD Trans with the 2.93 FD in it.  I shifted from 4th to 3rd and no change at all, shifted back to 4th and no change.   A bit of research on Google says the 4th gear OD clutch has packed it in.  I knew from the get go, that these cars had a glass 4th gear hence why the computer will not let the car shift into 4th regardless of speed if your foot is on the floor boards. It never really worried or bothered me as you can do nearly 130mph in 3rd (about 235kph)  We have never towed anything with the car but apparently its common for these to fail around 120,000 miles.   The only good part about this whole mess is it does not seem that hard to replace the 4th gear clutch pack.  From reading it even sounds like I don't have to pull the trans off the motor, just drop the cradle to get access to the side cover pull a bunch of stuff out, replace the 4th gear clutch pack and put it back together.

Anyone else have any info on this?

Keep track of every single piece you unbolt.

If/When you split the valve passages, do it very carefully, and try not to lose all the ball bearings that will fall out, and figure out where they go.

I just tore apart my old 4T60e and there are a lot of pieces in there...

Holy Crap Harrison, that does look like a lot of parts, I am hoping that I don't have to take that much apart.  From what I have read I don't have to pull the bottom off, just the side cover.  However if I do need to pull the valve body I will be sure to be very careful.

Thanks for the heads up.

That's the entire transmission. And 90% of it comes out the side, pretty
much everything up the the diff. And I think the first thing under the side
cover is the valve passages, I'm not sure how deep the 4th gear clutch
pack is, but I know a couple aren't too deep.
