Still working on the fire ball, did any one look at the movie
i poster?-thats not a slight glow exactly?-I use a Laser Infrared
Thermo gun an got
surface temperature-800 dg.@5000/RPM
an shut her down befor somthing melted eh! After replacing
all ECM fuel metering components,an fixing Vac/leeks its a lot
better,but @ 5000rpm just the rear 3 CYL-2-4-6 get hot.1-3-5
 get red-
slight glow LOL- but not like the rear bank. What i know
for sure is.
-#A-going through a ton of fuel
-#B-smell unburnt fuel in exhaust when running.
-#C- same in closed or open loop.
-#D- injectors don't leek/holds 30LB-+ for one hour
-#E-EGR is all new/pipe an valve,no leeks.
-#F-new -CTS/ECM sensor
-#G-cold start INJ is not leeking, tested good.
-#H-the 0/2 is new less than one hour on most
of this stuff,so i think its Fuel- any one care to toss
their 2 cents in would be appreciated.next i will check
the Cat an see if it fried! an fuel SYS again-AUGF!
thanks all for reading this post,an heres the movie again
in case you miss it in past post LOL-Cheers.
Thanks-Joe

So...what is a slight glow exactly...a very very faint
touch of light red or would it be acceptable to see a
definite red color change encompassing the pipe in varied
spots...??? anyone got pics maybe?

so much good info here, thanks.Eng runs a little, alittle rough in my mind, but dosen't shake or miss.when i built the 2.8 i checked the timeing with the heads off,with#1 @TDC an marked the harmonic
balancer,it was on the mark-0 no slipage.i disconnect the EGR when it was running last weekend an pulled it open by hand to see if anything would change, yes, with it held open,@2000 to 5000 rpm the
Manafold would get hot faster.hooked it back up.back to SQ-A?timeing was done with the jumper in @15/16@1000RPM,so its vaccume probly? so many lines, allso brake booster, should check it to.any help
would be great! thanks

Damien could be right. If it's pitch black out, I have seen manifolds glow ever-so-slightly right at the ports. How does the engine run if you block off EGR completely? Still rough? How is your fuel efficiency? If you have no other symptoms other than a faint glow, I wouldn't fret.
Never shift into reverse without a back-up plan.

That's correct. You've just got to hope the outer ring of your harmonic balancer hasn't slipped (like mine had), otherwise the timing marks would be all out of whack.

Found it,this is rite i take it?
Remove panel that houses cigarette lighter (they are torx screws). Behind
panel is ALDL (Assembly Line Diagnostic Link), use a wire or paper clip (bent
to a "U" shape), and connect terminals A and B. They are the only two pins
side by side on the connector.

Start engine, SES light will flash every second, ECM is in "field service" mode
(all computer advance is removed).

Connect timing light and point to marks, timing is 10 degrees BTDC.

Did you set the timing with the jumper in place?

If you have a fuel pressure gauge, check the fuel pressure, and double check the timing.  I should rephrase that, check the timing first, advance it at least a couple degrees.

Other common issues for glowing exhaust are, fuel pressure too low, bad or disconnected O2 sensor.  Bad ground for O2 sensor.

If you have an intake leak due to a gasket that did not seal correctly it will cause a high idle, and lean condition which can cause the red exhaust syndrome.

Double check all the hoses that you removed and put back on, double check all the bolts that they are tight.

Start with the easy stuff and the basics and work your way up.
